Antecedentes y Objetivos: Cada vez se sabe más de la diversidad vegetal en el bosque tropical caducifolio, pero en gran medida se desconocen sus simbiosis micorrízicas. El estatus micorrízico y su morfología aportan información importante sobre su papel ecológico en estos ecosistemas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue describir la morfología y los tipos de asociaciones fúngicas que establecen algunas plantas dominantes del estrato arbóreo del bosque tropical caducifolio en época de secas y lluvias. Métodos: El muestreo de raíces se realizó en la costa del Pacífico de México en Chamela, Jalisco, de 2012 a 2014 y desde Puerto Escondido hasta Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, en 2016. Las raíces se muestrearon a través de núcleos de suelo y por rastreo desde el tronco de Achatocarpus gracilis, Achatocarpus spp., Coccoloba barbadensis, C. liebmannii, Cordia elaeagnoides, Guapira petenensis, Lonchocarpus sp., Ruprechtia fusca y R. aff. pallida. Se revisó cada raíz en el microscopio estereoscópico en busca de micorrizas; algunas se aclararon, tiñeron y se montaron en laminillas; se hicieron cortes anatómicos, se tomaron fotografías con microscopio óptico y se describieron las asociaciones rizosféricas según los referentes morfológicos para cada tipo de micorriza. Resultados clave: Todas las plantas tuvieron asociaciones micorrízicas activas en época de secas y de lluvias. Se describieron 64 morfotipos ectomicorrízicos que presentaron variantes morfológicas: zonación del manto en raicillas secundarias o formación de manto incipiente; ausencia de ramificación; ausencia de la red de Hartig o presencia con estructuras intracelulares. Achatocarpus presentó micorrizas duales de ectomicorrizas con micorrizas arbusculares. Conclusiones: Nuestros resultados coinciden en las diferencias morfológicas en las ectomicorrizas que fueron observadas previamente para Nyctaginaceae en Ecuador y Brasil, y se amplían estas observaciones a más familias dentro de Caryophyllales y la familia Fabaceae. Con estas observaciones, y lo reportado previamente, se propone un nuevo concepto morfológico de ectomicorriza “incipiente” para angiospermas tropicales.

Coastal dunes are important protective features against sea level rise and coastal storms. Interactions between dune plant aboveground structures and sediment trapping that allow for dune building and maintenance are well established. More recently, studies documenting belowground biomass for promoting erosion resistance in dominant dune species have been conducted, yet a knowledge gap remains regarding species-specific characterization of whole plants, specifically with respect to roots, rhizomes, and belowground stems.Our objective was to quantify above-and belowground traits of four dominant dune grasses to document the potential for species-specific effects on dune growth, maintenance, and erosion resistance. We examined above-and belowground traits among four prominent dune grasses of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North America: Ammophila breviligulata, Panicum amarum, Spartina patens, and Uniola paniculata. Whole plant samples of each species were collected from the foredune at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center's Field Research Facility in Duck, North Carolina, USA, and quantified for several above-and belowground traits (e.g., stem height, rhizome number and length, root surface area by diameter class, root tensile strength, and mycorrhizal percent infection). Belowground factors known to impact important dune processes, such as rhizome length, mycorrhizal percent infection, and root traits, differed substantially among species. When visualized in multivariate space, all species significantly differed in suites of aboveand belowground traits. When considering belowground only, Ammophila and Spartina were similar, despite differences in biomass allocation. Species separated along axes related to mycorrhizal association, biomass allocation, and root construction. The four co-occurring dune grass species were dissimilar in suites of plant traits. Belowground trait differences were driven by those describing root construction, biomass allocation, and mycorrhizal infection.

Many wild ornamental plant species have been introduced to improve the landscape of cities; however, until now, no study has been performed to explore the composition and function of foliar endophytes associated with cultivated rare plants in cities after their introduction. In this study, we collected the leaves of the healthy ornamental plant Lirianthe delavayi from wild and artificially cultivated habitats in Yunnan and compared their diversity, species composition, and functional predictions of their foliar endophytic fungal community based on high-throughput sequencing technology. In total, 3125 ASVs of fungi were obtained. The alpha diversity indices of wild L. delavayi populations are similar to those of cultivated samples; however, the species compositions of endophytic fungal ASVs were significantly varied in the two habitats. The dominant phylum is Ascomycota, accounting for more than 90% of foliar endophytes in both populations; relatively, artificial cultivation trends to increase the frequency of common phytopathogens of L. delavayi, such as Alternaria, Erysiphe. The relative abundance of 55 functional predictions is different between wild and cultivated L. delavayi leaves (p < 0.05); in particular, chromosome, purine metabolism, and peptidases are significantly increased in wild samples, while flagellar assembly, bacterial chemotaxis, and fatty acid metabolism are significantly enhanced in cultivated samples. Our results indicated that artificial cultivation can greatly change the foliar endophytic fungal community of L. delavayi, which is valuable for understanding the influence of the domestication process on the foliar fungal community associated with rare ornamental plants in urban environments.
