Do Open-ended Design Projects Motivate First-year Engineering Students?

Abstract: This complete research paper examines students' situational motivation responses to open-ended design projects with varying degrees of autonomy control in a freshman Introduction to Engineering course. Four sections of the course were given different project themes with different constraints on scope and materials. The Situational Motivation Scale (SIMS) survey, an instrument to measure four types of motivation (intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation and amotivation) based on Self-Det… Show more

“…Within engineering, design projects allow students to explore the underlying concepts guided by their individual interest and skills (Cheville, 2010; C. Wang, 2020). Open-ended projects use constraints to allow students to design or analyze real-world problems using the knowledge gained.…”

“…Based on user-centered questions and preliminary research the team picks the project that interests them the most. Letting the student teams pick the project problem heightens their interest in developing the prototypes [10]. Once the students learn about the technology related to the equipment, they are immediately intrigued and start conducting research on their own to learn more about the problem/equipment, and how they can generate possible solutions.…”

“…The agriculture sector is a leader in innovative technology. The students also enjoy picking their project and this is a large motivator in their willingness to complete the project and complete extra research [10]. Since Foundations of Engineering Design II class is a freshman-level class, several modifications were made to the delivery of the project assignment to assist with executive functioning skills in college.…”
