Do patients with lactose intolerance exhibit more frequent comorbidities than patients without lactose intolerance? An analysis of routine data from German medical practices

Abstract: BackgroundThe increase in food intolerances poses a burgeoning problem in our society. Food intolerances not only lead to physical impairment of the individual patient but also result in a high socio-economic burden due to factors such as the treatment required as well as absenteeism. The present study aimed to explore whether lactose intolerant (LI) patients exhibit more frequent comorbidities than non-LI patients.MethodsThe study was conducted on a case-control basis and the results were determined using rou… Show more

“…Similar data were found by Ponte (20) , at the Walter Cantídio University Hospital (HUWC) in Fortaleza/CE. In Germany, Schiffneret (37) conducted a survey, in which the most common complaints among individuals with LI were abdominal pain (34.5%), vomiting (14%), and abdominal distension (10.4%), presenting a strongly significant correlation between diagnoses of LI and IBS. Unlike the work of Schiffneret (37) , the present study did not reflect any relation to IBS, since none of the surveyed students fell within the diagnostic criterion, although they manifested suggestive symptoms.…”

“…Moreover, other extra-intestinal symptoms have been described in patients with lactose intolerance, for example, memory deterioration, cephalalgy muscoskeletal pain, depression, anxiety, ulcers in the oral mucosa, and heart rhythm disorders. The cause could be the toxic effects of chemical substances such as acetone, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and peptides which are formed in the course of maldigestion and malabsorption of lactose [5,14].…”

“…Akut fertőzéses betegségek (enteritisek) nem okoznak FI-t. A panaszok erőssége arányos a bevitt fruktóz mennyiségével [28], glükóz egyidejű fogyasztása fokozza a panaszokat [29]. Akárcsak LI-ben, FI-ben is megjelenhetnek másodla-gos tünetek, betegségek (2. táblázat) [8,9]: ezek sokszor diagnosztikai nehézséget okoznak [30]. Szisztémás sclerosisban (scleroderma) az FI gyakoribb, mint egész-séges egyénekben (40% vs. 16%), és ezt a csökkent bél-motilitással, permeabilitással és bélflóra-rendellenesség-gel magyarázzák [31].…”
