Do We See Scale?

Abstract: The visual system is supposed to extract distance information from the environment in order to scale the size and distance of objects in the visual scene. The purpose of this article is to challenge this account in three stages: First, I identify three shortcomings of the literature on vergence as our primary cue to near distances. Second, I present the results from two experiments that control for these shortcomings, but at the cost of eradicating vergence and accommodation as effective distance cues (average… Show more

“…Vergence insufficiency: An equal and opposite distortion of visual direction in both eyes will lead to a shallower vergence angle (Fig.2, right), with two implications for near distance perception: First, static vergence is thought to be an absolute distance cue [Mon-Williams and Tresilian 1999, Viguier et al 2001, cf. Linton 2017, Linton 2018, implying near distance overestimation in the right panel of Fig.2. Second, in the context of augmented reality, zero disparity (i.e.…”

“…Our point is that under this alternative account, vergence as an absolute distance cue 697 is analogous to the poking in the eye case, rather than the visual processing of absolute distance it 698 was supposed to represent. Elsewhere we have developed this somatosensory account of vergence 699 to encompass not just vergence as an absolute distance cue, but also vergence as a cue to motion-700 in-depth (Linton, 2018). The key point being that under this account, vergence does not change 701 what we see.…”

“…So why was motion-773 in-depth not produced by changing vergence?" (Howard, 2012; motion-in-depth from vergence 774 discussed in Linton, 2018). So it seems surprising that now delta theta is being proposed as the 775 effective absolute distance cue whilst static vergence is not.…”

“…20 The risks of the traumatic experience of parent-child separation, particularly for children under five, can lead to life-long impacts to their health and well-being. 21 Exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences early in life has been linked with a number of physical, developmental, and psychological consequences, including reduced longevity. 22 A nurturing parent or caregiver relationship has been found to buffer the toxic effects of exposure to adverse experiences and stress, while forcible separation from this relationship can exacerbate the risks of harmful sequelae.…”
