One of the central social challenges of the 21st century is society’s aging. AI provides numerous possibilities for meeting this challenge. In this context, the concept of digital twins, based on Cyber-Physical Systems, offers an exciting prospect. The e-VITA project, in which a virtual coaching system for elderly people is being created, allows the same to be assessed as a model for development. This white paper collects and presents relevant findings from research areas around digital twin technologies. Furthermore, we address ethical issues. This paper shows that the concept of digital twins can be usefully applied to older adults. However, it also shows that the required technologies must be further developed and that ethical issues must be discussed in an appropriate framework. Finally, the paper explains how the e-VITA project could pave the way towards developing a Digital Twin for Ageing.

Motivated by the advancing computational capacity of distributed end-user equipments (UEs), as well as the increasing concerns about sharing private data, there has been considerable recent interest in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) that can be processed on on distributed UEs. Specifically, in this paradigm, parts of an ML process are outsourced to multiple distributed UEs, and then the processed ML information is aggregated on a certain level at a central server, which turns a centralized ML process into a distributed one, and brings about significant benefits. However, this new distributed ML paradigm raises new risks of privacy and security issues. In this paper, we provide a survey of the emerging security and privacy risks of distributed ML from a unique perspective of information exchange levels, which are defined according to the key steps of an ML process, i.e.: i) the level of preprocessed data, ii) the level of learning models, iii) the level of extracted knowledge and, iv) the level of intermediate results. We explore and analyze the potential of threats for each information exchange level based on an overview of the current state-of-the-art attack mechanisms, and then discuss the possible defense methods against such threats. Finally, we complete the survey by providing an outlook on the challenges and possible directions for future research in this critical area.

Social robots have grown increasingly integrated into our daily lives in recent years. Robots can be good social agents who engage with people, such as assistants and counselors, and good partners and companions with whom people can form good relationships. Furthermore, unlike devices such as smart speakers or virtual agents on a screen, robots have physicality, which allows them to observe the actual environment using sensors and respond behaviorally with full-body motions. In order to engage people in dialogue and create good relationships with robots as close partners, real-time interaction is important. In this article, we present a dialogue system platform developed with the aim of providing robots with social skills. We also built a system architecture for the robot to respond with speech and gestures within the dialogue system platform, which attempts to enable natural engagement with the robot and takes advantage of its physicality. In addition, we think the process called “co-creation” is important to build a good human–robot interaction system. Engineers must bridge the gap between users and robots in order for them to interact more effectively and naturally, not only by building systems unilaterally but also from a range of views based on the opinions of real users. We reported two experiments using the developed dialogue interaction system with a robot. One is an experiment with elderly people as the initial phase in this co-creation process. The second experiment was conducted with a wide range of ages, from children to adults. Through these experiments, we can obtain a lot of useful insights for improving the system. We think that repeating this co-creation process is a useful approach toward our goal that humans and robots can communicate in a natural way as good partners such as family and friends.
