Does activity space size influence physical activity levels of adolescents?—A GPS study of an urban environment

Abstract: Background Physical activity (PA) is closely linked with child and youth health, and active travel may be a solution to enhancing PA levels. Activity spaces depict the geographic coverage of one’s travel. Little is known about activity spaces and PA in adolescents. Objective To explore the relation between adolescent travel (using a spatial measure of activity space size) and daily moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), with a focus on school days. Methods In Fall 2012, we used Global Positioning Systems to manua… Show more

“…Seliske et al 2009;Kyttä et al 2016), or street network (e.g. Karusisi et al 2013;Lee et al 2015) buffers of different sizes typically centered around individual's residence. Although individual buffering is an important step forward in modelling LASs, the approach is not yet sensitive enough to the context and it does not account for individual differences in exposure areas (Perchoux et al 2016).…”

“…Activity space is defined as a geographic coverage of an individual's movement trajectory by considering visited places and taken routes that helped her get to her destinations (Lee, Voss et al 2016). There are several related concepts, such as the action space (Horton and Reynolds 1971), the awareness space (Brown and Moore 1970), or space-time prisms (Hagerstrand 1970).…”

“…Such studies relate physical activity of, for instance older adults or adolescents, to the walkability of neighborhoods, park visits, and modes of travel such as commuting or school-travel, and public transport (Carlson et al, 2016;Chaix et al, 2014;King et al, 2011;Marquet and Miralles-Guasch, 2015;Stewart et al, 2016;Voss et al, 2014Voss et al, , 2016Winters et al, 2015). Other studies use GPS tracking to measure activity space (Hirsch et al, 2014Lee et al, 2016). Our study can be distinguished from those cited above insofar as we combined quantitative and qualitative methods, instead of using only quantitative methods.…”
