Does globali zation affect human well-being?

Abstract: The prevailing theorizing of globalization's influence of human well-being suggests to assess both the favorable and unfavorable outcomes. This study formulates a dialectical model, adopts a comprehensive globalization measure and uses a three-wave panel data during 1980-2000 to empirically test direct and indirect effects of global flows' human consequences. The outcomes from random effect modeling reveal significant positive impacts of political globalization, whereas economic and social globalization do not… Show more

“…Previous studies have investigated whether a positive association between openness and health may be driven by the correlation with a third associated factor, for example political openness (Tsai, 2007) or overseas development assistance (Welander, 2012). Studies found evidence that the association is complex on closer inspection (Peneva & Ram, 2012), either because it is positive only for high-income but not low-income countries (Bergh et al, 2014), or positive only for LEB of men but not women (Bussmann, 2009).…”

“…However, the previous literature mainly focus on the macro side effects of globalization through concentrating on national economic factors (Dreher 2006, Rao et al 2011), entrepreneurship (Vining and De Kluijver 2007, life satisfaction (Hessami 2011) and human welfare (Tsai 2007), unionization (Dreher and Gaston 2007), political (Leibrecht et al 2011) and environmental issues (Lamla 2009), military interstate disputes (Choi 2010) etc., or nest the productivity and pass-through literatures spanning industrial organization, international trade, and international macro (De Loecker and Goldberg 2014) with a dearth on the ultimate financial outcomes of firm level effects. Among the highly limited past empirical research in the finance literature, Acheampong et al (2004) examined the profitability adjustment patterns of global firms and tested whether globalization equalizes speeds of profitability adjustment.…”

“…On the theoretical underpinnings, there are two main concepts in the debate over how globalisation influences human well-being; (i) the hegemony and neoliberal schools (Tsai, 2006). According to the first school, globalisation is a hegemonic project.…”

“…Another version of this hegemonic school maintains that contemporary global systems have on their path of neoliberalism, imposed a dynamic mode of production that undervalues redistribution channels that were formulated via Keynesian Social democracy. As maintained by Smart (2003), globalisation offers opportunities for the pursuit of private interest with disregard for common values of inclusive development (see Tsai, 2006). As Scholte (2000) has noted, the allocation of benefits from globalisation is not balanced because it is skewed towards the wealthy that are already in socio-economically advantaged positions.…”
