Does manufacturing agglomeration promote or hinder green development efficiency? Evidence from Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Abstract: Sustainable development can be mainly achieved by promoting the green transformation and development of the world economy and by improving the efficiency of regional green development, which often receive extensive attention from the academia. This paper uses a spatial econometric model to estimate the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on green development efficiency based on the panel data of China's Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB). The results show an overall large gap of green development efficiency … Show more

“…(1) Green development level: International institutions and researchers have constructed corresponding indicator systems according to the different scales of the research objects, mainly focusing on economic, societal, and environmental aspects [ 7 , 8 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. (2) Green development efficiency: Based on the input-output model, scholars have constructed green development efficiency evaluation index systems, including economic input, capital input, resource input, desirable output, and undesired output [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ].…”

“…Although such studies are not based on the perspective of industrial land, they have a certain reference value. Yuan et al found that MA could promote green development efficiency in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River but hinder the improvement of green development efficiency in the middle and lower reaches [ 30 ]. Ji et al found that both labor-intensive manufacturing agglomeration and capital-intensive manufacturing agglomeration will hinder the improvement of the local green economic efficiency level.…”

“…There is also a significant inverted "U" shape relationship between MA agglomeration and urban green development, and there is also significant regional heterogeneity in the degree of influence. Some scholars have found that the influence of MA agglomeration on pollutant emissions is an "N" shape relationship [30,31].…”
