Does market segmentation necessarily discourage energy efficiency?

Abstract: Prior research tends to propose and examine the negative relationship between market segmentation and energy efficiency. Does market segmentation necessarily impair energy efficiency? Considering the critical role that Chinaese government play in managing erergy efficiency, we propose a non-linear relationship between market segmentation and energy efficiency. Using data of 30 provinces in Mainland China during 2000 to 2017, we find an inverse U-shaped relationship between market segmentation and energy effici… Show more

“…In the process of modernization, the environment and health are closely related; therefore, environmental issues also affect the health of the elderly. Data reported in STATE OF GLOBAL AIR/2018 indicate that more than 95% of the world’s population is breathing dirty air that exceeds the allowed particulate matter (PM) concentration in global air quality guidelines; notably, the situation is even more severe in underprivileged countries ( Tian et al, 2020 , 2022 ; Yang et al, 2020 ; Wan et al, 2021 ). In 2016, approximately 6.1 million deaths worldwide were attributable to air pollution, including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic lung diseases ( IHME [The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation], 2018 ).…”

“…In the face of the growing imbalance between energy supply and demand, the Chinese government has incorporated energy conservation into its long-term strategic planning. In the Eleventh, Twelfth and Thirteenth Five-Year Plans, targets were set to decrease energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20%, 17% and 15% (Yang et al, 2020). Under the dual pressure of economic growth and energy conservation and emission reduction, enhancing energy efficiency (EE) is a must for China to realize sustainability .…”

“…To address environmental challenges, the Chinese government has prioritized environmental governance and implemented a number of initiatives and policies. 2 However, the lack of an effective monitoring and regulatory mechanism has resulted in a limited effect of these policies on raising environmental awareness among businesses and a significant gap between intended and achieved goals ( Tian et al, 2020 ; Yang et al, 2020 ). According to the 2019 Bulletin of Ecology and Environment Status of China , 53.4% of Chinese cities exceeded ambient air quality standards in 2019, with 337 cities experiencing 452 days of severe pollution, an increase of 88 days from 2018.…”
