Does music from noise-canceling headphones have a beneficial effect on men undergoing transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy?

Abstract: Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of music with noise-canceling headphones on men undergoing transrectal ultrasound–guided prostate biopsy (TRUSPB) in a prospective randomized study. Methods From January to February 2020, 94 men underwent TRUSPB at our institution. They were divided into two groups and wore noise-cancelling headphones—group 1 (n = 47) did not listen to music and group 2 (n = 47) listened to music. We examined the patients… Show more

“…Unlike other solid organ cancers where imaging plays a pivotal role in identifying patients requiring biopsy, prostate cancer (PCA) is diagnosed by 10–12 random core prostate biopsies (PBxs) from 10–12 areas in the prostate. 1 , 2 , 3 Recently, prebiopsy magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been recommended in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines based on results of improving prediction of clinically significant PCA (cs-PCA). 4 , 5 , 6 Furthermore, introducing MRI/transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) fusion biopsy reduces sampling error and improves risk stratification.…”

“…While mainly being used for recreational activities such as travelling and commuting or for industrial work, ANCH are also in use sparsely in certain areas of health care facilities such as intensive care units to reduce noise exposure of patients [ 24 , 25 ]. The use of ANCH has also been proven to reduce patients’ anxiety while being awake during surgery and seems to improve the overall experience during wide awake surgery as well [ 26 , 27 ].…”
