Does resource availability modulate shade avoidance responses to the ratio of red to far‐red irradiation? An assessment of radiation quantity and soil volume

Abstract: We conducted two experiments to investigate the expression of shade avoidance in response to low ratios of red to far-red irradiation (R : FR) in the C % perennial grass Schizachyrium scoparium at two levels of above-ground (photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) 400-700 nm) and below-ground (soil volume) resource availability and in plants of two ages. Young plants showed greater sheath and ramet height in response to low R : FR and old plants showed reduced ramet initiation in experiments one and tw… Show more

“…Container-grown plants were used to minimize site and soil related effects on germination and nutrient availability (Monaco and Briske 2000). Dolomitic limestone (2 metric tons ha À1 ) and hydrated lime (1 metric ton ha À1 ) were applied to raise soil pH to 6.3 and added along with 35 kg ha À1 N, P and K as commercial fertilizer (Peters ProfessionalÒ All Purpose 20-20-20 from W. R. Grace & Co., Fogelsville, Pennsylvania, USA).…”

“…Many grass species adjust to shade by increasing leaf length and specific leaf area to increase light acquisition, while at the same time slowing tiller production or vegetative propagation (Monaco and Briske 2000), compromising sward persistence. Defoliation (clipping or grazing) disrupts the light acquisition process.…”

“…Tree shade changes light intensity and quality depending on tree species, seasons of year, time of day, and cloud cover. Light quantity and associated quality induces various morphological adaptations in understory plants such as leaf elongation, reduced specific leaf weight, and altered rates of tiller production (Devkota and Kemp 1999;Monaco and Briske 2000;Belesky 2005).…”

“…Container-grown plants (with the pot bottoms removed) were used to eliminate or minimize site and soil related effects on germination, growth and nutrient availability. [Monaco and Briske (2000) present rationale for using container-grown plants.] Lime and fertilizer application was based on soil test results.…”
