Does rural industrial integration improve agricultural productivity? Implications for sustainable food production

Abstract: Although the literature demonstrates that rural industrial integration can enhance farmers' income, foster rural development, its impact on agricultural total factor productivity (ATFP), a critical aspect of sustainable food systems remains unclear. Using provincial-level data from 2008 to 2018, this paper constructs a composite index of rural industrial integration and examines its effect, heterogeneity, and spatial spillover on ATFP growth in China. The findings indicate that the levels of rural industry int… Show more

“…This outcome can be attributed to the fact that agricultural extension centers at the county level and above possess stronger faculty and more effective skill transfer capabilities compared to those at the township level. This finding aligns with the notion that technical training, similar to education, exhibits a positive trend in terms of faculty quality and desired outcomes as the level of training increases (Ye et al, 2023).…”

“…A possible explanation is that for farmers with lower levels of maize specialization, the area and share of maize planted are lower, and the MSSR has a limited impact on their returns and does not change their planting decisions, so the MSSR does not have an impact on their maize productivity. For more specialized maize farmers, due to market price differentials, farmers tend to choose high-quality varieties or improve the soil to improve the quality of maize, thus significantly increasing their maize productivity (Ye et al, 2023b).…”
