Does the Automatic Measurement of Interleukin 6 Allow for Prediction of Complications during the First 48 h of Acute Pancreatitis?

Abstract: Acute pancreatitis (AP) in most patients takes a course of self-limiting local inflammation. However, up to 20% of patients develop severe AP (SAP), associated with systemic inflammation and/or pancreatic necrosis. Early prediction of SAP allows for the appropriate intensive treatment of severe cases, which reduces mortality. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been proposed as a biomarker to assist early diagnosis of SAP, however, most data come from studies utilizing IL-6 measurements with ELISA. Our aim was to v… Show more

“…Interleukin-6 significantly improves the predictive value for severe acute pancreatitis but is difficult to detect [34]. With the advent of a fully automated assay, IL-6 is currently being used clinically in some hospitals [35]. Therefore, continuing to study valuable markers is necessary.…”

“…Kolber et al. 30 stated that an elevated serum Ang-2 level was not significant ( P = 0.1) in predicting severity of AP on day 1 of onset but could predict ( P = 0.041) severity of AP on day 2. Dumnicka et al.…”

“…Other inflammatory markers are also associated with AKI in AP. During the first two days of AP, serum urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) positively predicted AKI [111], while serum interleukin 6 positively correlated with renal markers (cystatin C and NGAL) [112].…”
