The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is crucial in ensuring food safety and security in Europe. Providing a stable and diverse food supply also supports rural economies and promotes social, environmental and economic sustainability. However, as CAP consumes approximately 30% of the EU budget, debates regarding its pertinence have arisen. This paper aimed to understand European citizens’ perceptions of CAP, its associated benefits and their level of agreement regarding the allocation of the EU budget. Ultimately, the goal was to gain insights into EU citizens’ attitudes and perceptions towards the CAP. Information and data come from the European Survey Eurobarometer. The methods include statistical inferential techniques adjusted to the nature of the variables and goals. The findings confirm that European citizens generally perceive the CAP positively and have positive attitudes about the CAP. While some differences among various social groups may exist, the results did not identify any specific group strongly opposing the CAP. Overall, European citizens hold a favorable attitude towards the CAP, its associated benefits and budget allocation. This paper brings new insights into new European CAP measures and programs to promote food security and the sustainability of agriculture among European countries and citizens. These insights may be useful for public decision-makers to define better policies and measures adjusted to European citizens and to promote food security and sustainability.

The European Union (EU) has historically sought to influence environmental policies of other countries through multilateral environmental agreements. Under its 7th Environmental Action Plan and Trade for All strategy it now seeks to extend its environmental policy projection through trade; its recent free trade agreements now contain chapters addressing environment and sustainable development. However, by adopting high environmental standards the EU can also advance its own economic interests suggesting an ambiguous motivation. The recent Korean, Japanese and Canadian FTAs and the Mercosur agreements are examined in order to place the extent of this environmental turn within the context of economic advantage. The finding is that while environmental protection provisions in these FTAs may have environmental benefits, they may also serve EU domestic economic interests. This motivation has implications for new FTA negotiations, such as those with New Zealand and Australia, and now the UK.

As for all EU member states, EAFRD is an important part of the CAP implementation in Romania. By a comparative study, the present paper analyses some aspects of EAFRD projects, implemented in Romania during 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 programming periods. The analysis was focused on projects addressed to farming and food processing activities, using relevant AFIR reported data. Investments for agricultural holdings recorded better results during the second period, compared to the first one: a much lower cancelling rate and a higher total value of the projects. However, the increased average value showed a preference for larger farms. More financing opportunities and better consultancy services should be made available to medium farms. While also presenting a positive improvement, of a significantly decreased cancelling rate, investments for food processing activities also showed a much lower total value. This should be a cause for concern, as insufficient food processing facilities represents one of the main problems of the Romanian agri-food sector. Investments in mentioned sector must be promoted and made a priority in the upcoming 2021-2027 programming period.
