“…Noting ICT's contribution to economic progress in the advanced countries, LMICs being latecomers are now speeding up the development of the ICT sector as a major focus of general economic reforms (Rath, 2016, Rath andHermawan, 2019). “…The literature widely recognizes that digital innovation in the form of information and communication technologies (ICT) has a significant influence on economic growth and productivity (see, for instance, Cette et al, 2005;Farkhanda, 2007;Venturini, 2009;Dimelis and Papaioannou, 2010;Heeks, 2010;Cortes and Navarro, 2011;Ahmed and Ridzuan, 2013;Rath, 2016;Niebel, 2018). As a consequence, rapid adoption of ICT in terms of access and use is observed worldwide (Chinn and Fairlie, 2007;Lam and Shiu, 2010;ITU, 2018).…”

However, adoption of ICT, particularly the use of mobile phones and internet, has been rapidly increasing over time and now drives economic activity (see, for instance, Katz, 2009;Byrne et al, 2011;Avgerou et al, 2016;Rath, 2016).…”

“…The many "digital divides" that exist in terms of internet access, use, and ability compound the challenge of generalization from search data (Dimaggio et al 2001;Guillén and Suárez 2005). In many countries, internet users (including Google users) tend to be more educated, wealthy, young, male, and urban, and divides also fall along national-level characteristics such as government regime and size of economy, but these individual-and national-level divides are greatly diminishing over time (Fatehkia et al 2018;Garcia et al 2018;Rath 2016;Stier 2017;Straumann and Graham 2016). Search data nonetheless hold the potential to offer valuable insights that can extend research on national and developmental perceptions.…”
