Does the menopausal status of female gynecologists affect their prescription of menopausal hormone therapy?

Abstract: Most female gynecologists in this survey would use MHT if menopausal symptoms were present. Postmenopausal physicians use MHT and prescribe it to their symptomatic patients at a higher rate than premenopausal physicians.

“…Still, all physicians revealed that they were hesitant in opening a dialogue on menopause with their patients and, instead, waited for patients to take that initiative. However, research shows that women prefer speaking with female physicians about menopause, 14–16 which would thus preclude opportunities for patients to converse with male practitioners. Physicians in this study observed that they would have been able to begin a conversation with their patients if there were means to measure menopause symptoms severity, indicating they were oblivious to the Menopause Rating Scale, 17 which is a standardized and widely used tool (internationally and in India) to assess severity of menopause symptoms 4,7,18–20 .…”

“…4 The current practices are guided by factors such as physician knowledge 7 , their own menopausal status and geographical location including acceptance as per social norms. 8 Pakistan studies show that most providers are not expert gynecologists, and hence are unaware about potential benefits and risks of MHT. Therefore, are unlikely to recommend it, whereas evidence demonstrates 75% women may consider MHT if recommended by their care providers.…”
