Does the Polycentric Urban Region Contribute to Economic Performance? The Case of Korea

Abstract: This study aims to explore whether and to what extent two types of polycentricity, morphological and functional, affect the level of urban economic performance. In the analysis, it is found that morphological polycentricity is positively associated with the level of labor productivity whereas functional polycentricity is negatively related to it. In the context of the Korean urban system, characterized by the domination of a few cities and high levels of population density, regions which are more morphological… Show more

“…Several elements make up the functional dimension of the polycentric urban region. The first involves setting the boundaries of this type of space, which is most often delimited by a collection of cities in which the travel time between them is in the range of 1 to 1.5 hours travel time (Kwon and Seo, 2018). The second element is the coherence of connections within a polycentric urban region, which may take the form of infrastructural, economic, political, educational, business services, etc.…”

“…Liu et al [40] use the intercity transportation network between major cities in China to measure the urban polycentricity. In the study of exploring the effect of polycentricity on urban economic performance, Kwon and Seo [41] employ traffic flow data to detect urban polycentricity in Korea. Therefore, the traffic patterns in the urban regions are effective in identifying polycentric urban regions, especially with the advantages of high data availability and prompt updating.…”
