Doing interpretive research

Abstract: Interpretive research in information systems (IS) is now a well-established part of the field. However, there is a need for more material on how to carry out such work from inception to publication. I published a paper a decade ago (Walsham, 1995) which addressed the nature of interpretive IS case studies and methods for doing such research. The current paper extends this earlier contribution, with a widened scope of all interpretive research in IS, and through further material on carrying out fieldwork, using… Show more

“…Research Approach The nature of this inquiry as well as its focus on investigating a contemporary event taking place within the health care system in Nigeria suggests that a case study method is appropriate (Yin, 2014).Within the case study, this research adopts a broadly interpretive approach where the subjective meaning that people create within their environment is studied and analysed (Walsham, 2006), with the aim of understanding the social context of an information systems in use (Oates, 2006). This study is exploratory in nature and aims to understand efforts to employ mobile devices to improve health service delivery for citizens (Yin, 2014).…”

“…The interpretive nature of the research expedited the response (subjective data) needed to understand the impact of the alignment or lack of it between IS strategy and technological innovation on the performance of a firm. Since this study has not been conducted among the universal banks in Ghana, using the qualitative approach was appropriate to explore and understand phenomena emerging in the natural settings of these firms that result from their interactions with organizations, people, and technology [104]. Meaning-making primary data that produced detailed descriptions of the situations and events were gathered through personal interviews, inductively analysed to build patterns, and organized these patterns into categories [105].…”
