Doing Mixed Methods Research Pragmatically: Implications for the Rediscovery of Pragmatism as a Research Paradigm

Abstract: This article explores the practical relevance of pragmatism as a research paradigm through the example of a piece of pragmatic research that not only used both quantitative and qualitative research methods but also exploited the inherent duality of the data analyzed. Thus, the article aims to make the case that pragmatism as a research paradigm supports the use of a mix of different research methods as well as modes of analysis and a continuous cycle of abductive reasoning while being guided primarily by the r… Show more

“…Pragmatism provides researchers with the ability to observe, understand, reflect and provide guidelines to mediate within a social context (Goldkuhl 2012;Saunders et al 2009). The pragmatist philosophy has not been used significantly in research; however, it is instrumental in developing change and action, and how knowledge can relate to that action (Feilzer 2010;Morgan 2014). This is quite fundamental to developing theories within the African context (indigenous theory), as information systems theory is quite dominated by world views developed in different contextswestern and business contexts (Mansell 2011).…”

“…This research took a pragmatic research approach (Feilzer 2010) using mixed methods (Creswell 2014): qualitative (semi-structured interviews -see Minichiello, Sullivan, Greenwood, and Axford, 2004) and two quantitative measures: a satisfaction survey, and a competency assessment tool (COMPASS ® ) (Speech Pathology Australia, 2011). Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were needed to address the study aim and to explore students' experiences and perceptions as well as ratings.…”

“…This research took a pragmatic research approach (Feilzer 2010) and combined qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews), and two quantitative measures: a satisfaction survey and a competency assessment tool (COMPASS®) to determine if students achieved expected competency levels or not. Student performance against a range of clinical competencies was assessed in the usual way using the Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology (COMPASS®) tool (Speech Pathology Australia 2011).…”

“…For the pragmatist researcher, then, the key assumptions are to use 'what works', with an emphasis on employing multiple perspectives to focus on and understand the research problem, giving credence to both objective and subjective knowledge (Creswell, 2014;Feilzer, 2010). Thus, pragmatism does not focus on methods per se but on solutions, facilitating researcher choice in regard to the methods or techniques that best answer the research question (Cherryholmes, 1992;Creswell, 2014).…”
