In recent years, more attention have been given to the sub-national determinants of multinational enterprises' location behaviour. However, the role of 'global cities' has received limited attention despite their central position in the global economy. In this thesis, I analyse and discuss the concepts of location, the liability of foreignness caused by MNEs' spatial separation of foreign operations, and their relation to the factors that drive MNEs toward, or away from, global cities. Rooted in the existing literature on global cities, I follow the arguments that three interrelated distinct characteristics of global cities -cosmopolitanism, interconnectedness, and availability of advanced producer services -help the MNEs overcome the social costs of doing business abroad. In addition, I identify MNEs' operations that benefit or suffer from the locational attributes of global cities, and how they in turn relate to the liability of foreignness associated with the international operations of MNEs. Consistent with these arguments, I operationalise the liability of foreignness as institutional distance and analyse its influence on the location of a large sample of subsidiaries from Nordic and Japanese MNEs. My results indicate that not only do MNEs have a strong propensity to locate in global cities, but also that these choices are affected by institutional distance and industrial characteristics of R&D-and advertising-intensity. Consequently, my results provide empirical support for the arguments of global cities' role in the processes of globalisation, the co-evolution of global cities and MNEs, and the ability of global cities to reduce the liability of foreignness suffered by MNEs. Ultimately, my study contributes to the understanding of the implication of location and distance on MNEs' international strategies, but also points to further investigation on the role of global cities in the nexus of place, space, and organisation to expand our knowledge on the geographic aspect of MNE behaviour.II

Esta pesquisa buscou identificar se a satisfação das pessoas com deficiência em relação às possibilidades de carreira e desenvolvimento está relacionada aos investimentos das empresas na carreira de seus funcionários. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa, cujos dados foram analisados estatisticamente. Participaram da investigação 51 pessoas com deficiência (PcDs) de diversos estados brasileiros. Os resultados indicam que, do ponto de vista de trabalhadores com deficiência, as políticas de desenvolvimento da carreira profissional não são claras e explícitas dentro das organizações, e que as formas de gestão de carreira adotadas pelas empresas influenciam diretamente na satisfação das PcDs em relação às oportunidades de crescimento profissional. Foi possível verificar ainda que as estratégias de contratação de PcDs para cumprimento de uma cota, sem considerar a competência técnica e funcional desses trabalhadores, contribuem para que eles se sintam insatisfeitos com as oportunidades de crescimento profissional. This research aimed to identify whether disabled persons' satisfaction with their career opportunities and development is related to company investment in the careers of its employees. This is a quantitative study, whose data were analyzed statistically. The investigation was carried out with 51 people with disabilities (PwD) from several Brazilian states. The results indicate that, from the standpoint of disabled workers, career development policies are not clear and explicit within their organizations, and that the forms of career management adopted by companies directly influence the satisfaction of PwD regarding opportunities for professional growth. It was also possible to verify that the strategies of hiring PwD to fulfill a quota, without considering the technical and functional competence of these workers, contributes to making them feel dissatisfied with their opportunities for professional growth. A study among a stratified sample of IsraeU disabled war veterans ascertained the contribution of 'potency' -a recently discerned stress-moderating Unk in the coping process -in promoting the readaptation to sodal Ufe of traumatically disabled persons. Potency reflects a combination of selfconfidence and commitment to and tmst in society. The data suggest that potency is likely to weaken the deleterious impact of inadequate coping with the unprecedented demands inherent in disability. Disabled army veterans with strong potency are less Ukely than those with weak potency to be affected by occasional coping failures, by subjectively perceived 'demands', or by occasional resource deficiencies. The evident instrumentality of potency for readjustment suggests that societal and personal factors simultaneously play a significant role in readjustment. The contribution of this study is in its illumination of the importance of the disabled person's perception of society, in addition to his/her individual resources, for successful reintegration into social Ufe.
