This paper focuses on the deliberate fabrication of quotations and their attribution to rival politicians by Spanish far-right activists, studying the ways in which such practices are used to undermine the credibility and legitimacy of political adversaries. The study’s dataset was obtained from a reliable Spanish fact-checking site (http://aldescubierto.org) specializing in disinformation spread in Spain by the far right. The dataset was subjected to an in-depth qualitative analysis of the taxonomy of delegitimization strategies in discourse. The analysis reveals a deliberate effort to depict left-wing politicians as unfit to govern the country. Specifically, it shows that fake quotes can help to present politicians as immoral and their policies as irrational. In short, fake quotes are used to erode trust in governing institutions and delegitimize politicians and policy initiatives.
