The design principle of composability among Web services is one of the most crucial reasons for the success and popularity of Web services. However, achieving error-free automatic Web service composition is still a challenge. In this paper, we propose a recursive composition based modeling and verification technique for Web service interaction. The application of recursive composition over a Web service with respect to a given set of Web services yields a recursive composition interaction graph (RCIG). In order to capture the requirement specifications of a Web service interaction scenario, we propose recursive composition specification language (RCSL) as a requirement specification language. Further, we employ the proposed RCIG as an interpretation model to interpret the semantics of a RCSL formula. Our verification technique is based on the generation and analysis of all possible interaction patterns. Performance evaluation results, provided in this paper, show that our proposition is implementable for the real world applications. The key advantages of the proposed approach are: (i) it does not require explicit system modeling as in model checking based approaches, (ii) it captures primitive characteristics of Web service interaction patterns, such as recursive composition, sequential and parallel flow, etc, and (iii) it supports automatic composition of services.

Web service composition (WSC) is the task of generating new composite web services that exhibit functionalities not supported by any single web service. In its simplest form this is achieved by linking existing web services in sequence. More complex forms link services in parallel or use alternative paths. WSC can be considered a planning task, with the web services being the planning operators and the initial state and the goals being provided by the user. Particularly, since web services operate in a stochastic environment, their output is not predictable, and the problem is formulated as a non-deterministic planning one. This article presents a critical, comprehensive and up-to-date review of the literature concerning alternative non-deterministic planning methods, including probabilistic planning, determinization methods, planning in the belief state space and translationbased methods. Furthermore, the article reviews existing implementations of WSC systems, employing a variety of planning approaches, and discusses the degree in which the current achievements from the non-deterministic planning field have been adopted successfully. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of its kind, one that provides a thorough introduction to the vast area of automated web service composition.

Automated Service Composition is one of the "grand challenges" in the area of Service-Oriented Computing. Mike Papazoglou was not only one of the first researchers who identified the importance of the problem, but was also one of the first proposers of formulating it as an AI planning problem. Unfortunately, classical planning algorithms were not sufficient and a number of extensions were needed, e.g., to support extended (rich) goal languages to capture the user intentions, to plan under uncertainty caused by the non-deterministic nature of services; issues that where formulated (and, partially addressed) by Mike, being one of his key contributions to the service community.In this chapter, we look at the development of the original vision of automated service composition as AI planning, going from planning with extended (rich) goals, further developing into composition under uncertainty, extending it to other domains (and reformulating the service composition as composition of sensors and actuators), and then showing possible alternative techniques for highly scalable service composition at the expense of the richness of the domain representation.
