Domestic dog as a human health hazard in north of Iran

Abstract: An epidemiological study was conducted to determine the prevalence of helminthic parasites of domestic dogs using stool samples in north of Iran in 2013. Stool samples (n = 100) were collected from domestic dogs of different ages and genders. Different techniques including wet smear, formalin-ether sedimentation method and flotation technique in saturated zinc chloride solution were performed on collected stools to detect eggs and larval stage of helminthes parasites. The overall prevalence of helminthic paras… Show more

“…Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of companion animals, dogs in particular, can cause serious illness in human as they facilitate zoonotic transmission by acting as a source of infection for people and as a bridge between wildlife and humans. In developing countries, abundance of stray dogs and canine faeces deposited on public and private properties are a recurrent irritant and an important public health issue due to the GI parasites with zoonotic potential (Rai et al, 2000;Sarvi et al, 2014). Many canine GI parasites exclude their eggs, larvae or oocysts with the dog faeces (Rinaldi et al, 2009).…”

“…Two major species of tapeworms of medical, and public health importance are Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis, which cause cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in humans, respectively. Detection of Echinococcus infections in defi nitive hosts is of great importance to epidemiological surveillance and evaluation of echinococcosis control programs (Sarvi et al, 2014). Control of echinococcosis relies on epidemiological information, including the accurate identifi cation of the causative agents (Qingling et al, 2014).…”

“…[22][23][24]52 These provinces have the most favourable climatic conditions for the survival of the Toxocara egg and the life cycle of the parasite, having a higher humidity and temperature. 25 In addition, in East Azerbaijan and Fars provinces where high incidences were found, toxocariasis was found in 78.8% and 52.78% of stray cats, respectively. 26,27 Further, toxocariasis was, at 27%, the most prevalent helminthic infection in examined domestic dogs in Mazandaran province.…”
