“…Similarly, Szinovacz (1981) has expanded upon this definition and operationalized power inequality as discrepancies between the real and ideal distribution of decision making (discussed as role satisfaction in the present study). Consequently, the current finding is in keeping with past research which has found that power inequality (operationalized as inequality in decision making or related factors) is associated with lower levels of marital satisfaction (see reviews by Gray-Little &Burks, 1983 andHuston, 1983) and higher levels of depression (Hinchliffe, Hooper & Roberts, 1978;Hoover & Fitzgerald, 1981). However, these later studies did not look at the potential mediating impact of marital distress, which the results of the present study suggest may impact the relationship between decision making and depression.…”

“…We perceive the risk of promoting dysfunctional self-blame in wives disposed toward depressive symptomatology. Previous research (Hinchliffe et al, 1978;Hoover & Fitzgerald, 1981) has shown that power imbalances in intimate relationships are associated with higher levels of depression, although Whisman and Jacobson (1989) found that this relationship was mediated by the impact of marital distress. Rather than supporting traditional power imbalances, our focus on gender differences was intended to emphasize wives' vulnerability to such imbalances and the need to support women in challenging husbands' behaviors contributing to their distress.…”
