Don’t Panic! Managing Library Anxiety with a Library Survival Guide

Abstract: Many academic library users, particularly incoming college freshmen, are unsure about what the library offers, how it is useful, where they can receive assistance. “…Kayango and Helm (2010) concurred that teaching faculty are essential in their guidance of graduate students' use and non-use of the library, especially at the beginning of their academic careers. This guidance can help students garner a sound understanding of library services and the librarian's role and help them feel more comfortable seeking out assistance to meet their research needs (Brinkman & Hartsell-Gundy, 2012;DiPrince et al, 2016).…”

Students often do not realize librarians can help them develop research skills.…”

“…Other researchers have tested various methods of incorporating warmth into library services and interactions (though the impact of librarian personality on students' library anxiety has not been tested) and one of the most common venues for intervention is new student orientation, due to the high percentage of incoming students that can be reached through orientation events. Orientation activities described in the literature include traditional information sessions (Brown, Weingart, Johnson, & Dance, 2006), distribution of "library survival guides" (DiPrince, Wilson, Karafit, Bryant, & Springer, 2016), and fun, casual, nonskills focused activities (Muszkiewicz, 2017).…”
