Dopamine, dopaminergic drugs and ocular hypertension

Abstract: The study refers to the clinical experiences performed with several D1 and D2 dopaminergic receptors agonists in 20 patients with high tension open angle glaucoma. The substances were administered topically as eye drops as well as an ocular eye bath. The parameter examined was intraocular pressure (IOP). The substances taken in consideration were: Dopamine, Ibopamine (dopamine analog), Fenoldopam and 3B90 (D1-receptor agonists) and Bromocriptine (dopaminergic agonist with higher affinity for D2 than for D1-rec… Show more

“…Of note, this increase in IOP is not dependent upon the mydriatic effect of the drug, since it cannot be inhibited by the administration of α-blockers [4]. Conversely, the increase in IOP can be attributed to D1-dopaminergic activity [31]. In more details, the increase in aqueous humor induced by the action of ibopamine on dopaminergic receptors is compensated by a corresponding outflow in the healthy eye, but not in the glaucoma eye [32].…”

“…O efeito hipertensivo da ibopamina tópica é transitório (150 a 180 minutos) e não está relacionado à midríase e sim, ao aumento da produção de humor aquoso (3)(4)(5)(6) .…”
