Dopant distribution in a Tm3+–Yb3+ codoped silica based glass ceramic: An infrared-laser induced upconversion study

Abstract: The optically active dopant distribution in a Tm(3+)-Yb(3+) doped silica based glass ceramic sample has been investigated. A systematic analysis of the upconversion fluorescence of the Tm(3+)-Yb(3+) codoped glass and glass ceramic has been performed at room temperature. Tm(3+) and Yb(3+) single doped glass and glass ceramics have also been included in the study. Upon infrared excitation at 790 nm into the (3)H(4) level of the Tm(3+) ions a blue upconversion emission is observed, which is drastically increased … Show more

“…Figure 7 shows the decay curves of the 5 D 4 Ǟ 7 F 5 transition of the Tb 3+ ions in NaCaPO 4 :mCe 3+ ,0.02Tb 3+ with different Ce 3+ concentrations. For the decay curves of the Tb 3+ ions, the decays show nonexponential curves, which can be calculated by the effective lifetime as Equation (3): [29] ( 3) in which I(t) represents the luminescence intensity at a time t. The decay times of the Tb 3+ ions are prolonged when Ce 3+ ions are doped. The result further testifies that there exists energy transfer from the Ce 3+ to the Tb 3+ ions.…”

“…Oxyfluoride glass ceramics have been paid much attention due to their combined advantages of oxide glasses and fluoride glasses [1,2]. They are fabricated using controlled heat treatments in an electric furnace, and nanocrystals are formed in the interior of glass [3].…”

“…166 Lahoz et al 167 focused their studies on Tm 3z /Yb 3z codoped glass ceramics of composition 30SiO 2 -15Al 2 O 3 -29CdF 2 -22PbF 2 -(42x2y)YF 3 -xTmF 3 -yYbF 3 , with x50, 0?1 and 1, and y50 and 2?5. This work shows the advantages of an oxide environment for the RE ion, instead of an ordered fluoride one, since an UC mechanism based on an energy transfer via phonons is suggested.…”
