“…Normal hepatic blood flow ratios are reported to have a negative predictive value of 83% [18], whereas the absence of portal venous gas has a negative predictive value of 91% [19]. Peak systolic blood flow, mean flow velocity, and volumetric blood flow of the superior mesenteric artery were also able to identify NEC [20]. However, no clinician has reported using these laboratory and radiology tests in our survey.…”

“…Doppler ultrasonography and flowmetry of the superior mesenteric arteries can measure the peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), resistivity index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI). Several recent publications recently demonstrated statistically significantly lower PSV ( p = 0.001) and EDV ( p = 0.001) in a sepsis cohort with clinical signs of NEC [57] and higher RI and PI in NEC patients compared to a control group [58]. These results suggest that intestinal blood flow ultrasonography may be a useful tool for predicting or diagnosing NEC.…”

“…In neonatal ( 21 , 22 ) or animal ( 23 , 24 ) studies, ultrasonography in the early stages of NEC suggests greater intestinal circulatory resistance and hemodynamic instability. Consistent with other studies, our finding extrapolates the relationship between high-resistance intestinal bloodstream and NEC to early postnatal stage.…”
