Doppler ultrasound measurements of renal functional reserve in healthy subjects

Abstract: Aims: The aim of this study was to calculate the normal values of renal functional reserve in healthy individuals measuring the resistive index and pulsatility index using Doppler ultrasonography. Material and methods: Forty healthy volunteer adults were included in the study. Their basal resistive index and pulsatility index values were measured and after oral protein load at 30th, 75th and 120th minutes, resistive index and pulsatility index measurements were repeated. The maximum changes in resistive index … Show more

“…In addition to these, the resistive index (RI) was calculated. The RI value is the ratio of the difference between the PSV and the EDV divided by PSV value: RI=(PSV–EDV)/PSV, and provides information about arterial impedance [ 10 ].…”

“…This test, performed in 18 healthy volunteers, seems to be very easy and accurate with no clinical risks for the patients. Moreover, Pekkafal and Kara proposed the incorporation of a Doppler resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) into the assessment of RFR [ 138 ]. The RFR assessment should be of particular utility in specific clinical situations (such as determining the status of the kidneys in potential living kidney donors; preparatory evaluation/counseling, etc.)…”
