DOREMUS: A Graph of Linked Musical Works

Abstract: Three major French cultural institutions-the French National Library (BnF), Radio France and the Philharmonie de Paris-have come together in order to develop shared methods to describe semantically their catalogs of music works and events. This process comprises the construction of knowledge graphs representing the data contained in these catalogs following a novel agreed upon ontology that extends CIDOC-CRM and FRBRoo, the linking of these graphs and their open publication on the web. A number of specialized … Show more

“…Knowledge is an important asset in all enterprises. For instance, Gutiérrez-Cuellar and Gómez-Pérez (2014) propose the HAVAS Knowledge Graph that aims to collect information from start-up, innovators, and tech companies; Amato et al (2017) present KIRA that gathers data from user, social media, and multimedia data sources; Quimbaya et al (2014) propose EXEMED that is a knowledge base for structuring clinical guidelines; Achichi et al (2018) propose DOREMUS, a knowledge graph of music works and events; and an Amazon product knowledge graph is led by Dong (2018). Knowledge is being continuously gathered and maintained in order to serve several purposes, from providing a common unified view on all data resources of the enterprises to powering their applications.…”

“…Some approaches have reused in innovative ways open data published by libraries enhancing the model of the original data and combining several datasets. 12,13 Typical uses include linking and enriching with external repositories, visualization interfaces and charts, and content analysis. However, making the choice of the best dataset is a challenge for data researchers as data quality is critical.…”

“…An important amount of semantic data models, vocabularies and knowledge graphs (KG) have flourished. On the data model and vocabularies side, we can mention CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model [3], Cultural-ON [8], Sampo [6] and the Getty vocabularies 1 . With its own data model [7], Europeana tries to facilitate the discoverability of cultural resources by collecting the resources'metadata and by centralizing them [5].…”

“…In the music domain which concerns more directly our work, we can mention the LinkedBrainz 3 project that helps MusicBrainz (an open music encyclopedia that collects music metadata) publish its database as Linked Data. Last, the DOREMUS knowledge graph [1] describes classical music works and their associated events (e.g. performances in concerts).…”
