Dormancy and chilling requirement of strawberry varieties for early forcing

Abstract: Breeding strawberry varieties for early forcing in glasshouses by heating and long-day illumination has certain aspects deviating from breeding varieties for the open. Varieties for early forcing must respond quickly on forcing by an adequate vegetative development, and early flowering and fruiting. It is essential that, prior to forcing, the dormancy of the plants is broken by means of adequate chilling. In phytotron experiments three varieties, used for forcing in the Netherlands, Glasa, Gorella and Redgauntle… Show more

“…Moreover, the growth after exposure to chilling is satisfactorily responsive to the effect of growing degree hours (GDH) (Swartz & Powell 1981;Lang 1987;Cesaraccio et al 2004Cesaraccio et al , 2006Atkinson et al 2013). Forcing Fragaria after a short period of dormancy influences not only the vegetative growth but also the floral capacity (Piringer & Scott 1964;Kronenberg & Wassenaar 1972). This could probably explain the reason for the earlier initiation of flowering in plants that received more chilling than those with no chilling.…”

“…Furthermore, large variation in chilling requirement exists for F. × ananassa adapted to different climatic regions (Darrow 1955;Kronenberg & Wassenaar 1972). That may explain the reason for the flowering stage after 9 and 11 weeks from plants that received 1080-and 1440-h chilling treatments.…”

“…Although considerable evidence exists for regional adaptations of physiological traits in North American strawberry cultivars (Arney, 1956;Darrow and Waldo, 1934;Guttridge, 1953;Kronenberg and Wassenaar, 1972), information about production traits is usually available only for cultivars tested in a rather narrow range of environments. The extent to which cultivars are physiologically adapted has ramifications for production efficiency, but direct comparisons of economically important characters may reveal more about the potential benefits of, and obstacles to, germplasm exchange.…”

“…Dormancy induction depends on photoperiod and temperature decreases in the late summer (Darrow and Waldo 1933;Arney 1955;Kronenberg and Wassenaar 1972). Morphologically, this is revealed by a reduction in leaf size and petiole length shortening (Chouard 1946;Durner and Poling 1987).…”
