Dorsal onlay urethroplasty using buccal mucosal graft and vaginal wall graft for female urethral stricture – Outcome of two-institution study

Abstract: Introduction: Female urethral stricture is an underdiagnosed condition and a diagnostic challenge. Traditionally treatment has been urethral dilatation. Recent studies have shown promising outcomes after female urethroplasty (FU). We report our two-institutional experience with dorsal onlay substitution FU using buccal mucosal graft (BMG) and vaginal wall graft (VWG). Methods: In this retrospective study, 32 women who underwent dorsal onlay urethroplast… Show more

“…Endoscopic management is most commonly the first treatment given the technical ease and relative low risk of dilation; however, this has not been shown to hold longterm symptom relief [3]. Our series adds to the growing body of data on patients with FUSD (Table 3) [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Dorsal BMG urethroplasty is successful in treating FUSD with low complication rate.…”

“…Khawaja et al in a prospective trial of 25 patients that underwent dorsal BMG urethroplasty reported a (92%) success with no incontinence at an average follow-up of 25.5 months. [ 6 ] Hampson et al published a multi-institutional retrospective experience of 39 dorsal BMG urethroplasties performed by 6 high-volume reconstructive surgeons over a 10 year period [ 7 ]. Average follow-up was 33 months and recurrence rate was 23%.…”

“…A few of literatures reported their cases of dorsal urethroplasty with buccal or lingual mucosa. All of them showed high success rates and low complication rates ( 3 , 10 , 16 , 22 18 ). In 2019, Hampson et al reported 39 cases of DBMG urethroplasty from multiple centers, which is the largest series for this technique ( 17 ).…”
