Dose and Concentration Responses of Common Nursery Weeds to Gallery, Surflan and Treflan

Abstract: Preemergence herbicides are applied as often as every eight to ten weeks in container nursery crop production in the southeastern United States. However, weeds often emerge before reapplication. Experiments were conducted to assess the minimum surface-applied doses and the in vitro concentrations of preemergence herbicides required to control susceptible weed species. Greenhouse and outdoor container experiments were conducted to determine surface-applied Treflan (trifluralin) doses required to control large c… Show more

“…Further, some of the most prevalent weeds observed in Apopka also contributed to the herbicide having a greater impact. Spotted spurge, one of the most commonly observed species in Apopka during the summer months, is typically controlled by isoxaben or isoxaben-containing herbicides (Gallitano and Skroch, 1993;Judge et al, 2004). Further, trifluralin + isoxaben provides partial control or suppression of florida pusley when applied at rates used in this trial (Dow AgroSciences, 2010).…”

“…Although preemergence herbicides are a cost-effective method for controlling weeds during crop production, there are several limitations for using preemergence herbicides during propagation. Currently, there are no preemergence herbicides labeled for use on nonrooted cuttings (Cochran et al, 2008;Cook and Neal, 2001;Judge et al, 2004;Marble and Chandler, 2016). Also, there is limited research on determining the herbicide safety and its actions during propagation and root development (Thetford and Gilliam, 1991).…”

“…As a result, hand weeding is commonly used for controlling weeds in propagation, but it is time-consuming and labor-intensive. The labor cost for hand weeding in container nurseries can total USD 9000 per hectare and can be up to 30 times more expensive than herbicide use, while an estimated overall economic loss of over USD 17,000 per hectare can be associated with weed infestations in nursery crops from several hundred to several thousand dollars per acre [2][3][4]. Additionally, there has been a decrease in the availability of the agricultural labor supply [5].…”
