Dose–response evaluation of a novel essential oil against Mutans streptococci in vivo

Abstract: Research has demonstrated the need for identifying a novel antimicrobial agent for topical use in the pediatric dental population. The essential oil of Lippia sidoides Cham. (LSO) has been described as having favorable biological properties, and a broad in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial spectrum against bacteria and yeast infections. Our aim was to determine a dose and formulation of LSO, acceptable for clinical testing in a pediatric population with dental caries. Thirty-seven 6-12-year old children were sel… Show more

“…is a perennial bushy plant native to the Caatinga, which is rich in aromatic essential oils. The medicinal properties of L. sidoides essential oil include antifungal (Fontenelle et al, 2007), antibacterial (Oliveira et al, 2006;Lobo et al, 2011), anti-helminthic (Camurça-Vasconcelos et al, 2008, larvicidal, and acaricidal activities (Carvalho et al, 2003;Cavalcanti et al, 2010). Some of these biological properties are attributed to the presence of thymol and carvacrol in its essential oil (Carvalho et al, 2003;Botelho et al, 2007).…”

“…De acordo com a OMS, plantas medicinais deveriam ser a melhor fonte de obter-se uma variedade de droga, pois o sistema público de saúde no Brasil não possui uma política de assistência farmacêutica capaz de suprir as necessidades medicamentosas da população, sobretudo no Nordeste brasileiro (LOBO et al, 2011;NASCIMENTO et al, 2007).…”

“…2,3 Essential oils extracted from its leaves have been shown to have antimicrobial properties for oral care, reducing gingivitis, and minimizing bone loss and inflammation associated with periodontal disease. 1,[4][5][6][7] Its action as an antileishmanial shows that L. sidoides may also be an effective alternative treatment for protozoal infections, 8,9 and the essential oil and hydrolysates have been shown to be effective pesticides against mollusks, 10 mosquito larvae, 11 and spider mites. 12 Elevation of intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) activates protein kinase A (PKA)-mediated phosphorylation and activation of cAMP response elementbinding protein (CREB).…”
