Dosimetric properties of photon beams from a flattening filter free clinical accelerator

Abstract: Basic dosimetric properties of 6 MV and 18 MV photon beams from a Varian Clinac 21EX accelerator operating without the flattening filter have been measured. These include dose rate data, depth dose dependencies and lateral profiles in a water phantom, total scatter factors and transmission factors of a multileaf collimator. The data are reviewed and compared with measurements for the flattened beams. The unflattened beams have the following: a higher dose rate by factors of 2.3 (6 MV) and 5.5 (18 MV) on the ce… Show more

“…Recently, there has been a lot of interest in using flattening filter‐free (FFF) beams which give the benefit of reduced headscatter and hence dose outside the field (2) . These beams also deliver the dose faster than flattened beams, which could be beneficial for hypofractionated treatments and reducing intrafractional organ motion (3) . Therefore, they require accurate and efficient quality assurance procedures including patient‐specific quality assurance.…”

“…Although surface doses have been studied under a range of conditions for conventional “flattened” beams, 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 there is very little data for filter‐free beams. Several authors have reported simple surface dose vs. field size variations in FFF beams, 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 but data for changes in SSD and in the presence of absorbers, such as the shadow tray, wedge, and couch, are unavailable.…”

“…Early investigations into the dosimetric properties of FFF beams were performed on modified linacs with the flattening filter manually moved out of the beamline 2 , 3 . Linacs with FFF beams have since been released by vendors and implemented clinically at many institutions.…”
