The idea of salvation in the world sets the theme of the hermitage and the world, monasticism in the world, worldly holiness in culture. Monasticism is seen as a state of mind regardless of status. The article examines the artistic images of monks in the world. Two Dostoevsky novels "The Idiot" and "Crime and Punishment" are considered. It is proved that in the novel "Idiot" the main character acts as a visionary mystic and a missionary ascetic, he is positively beautiful in everything, excessively gifted with a sense of truth, beauty, tact, harmony. The author's thought is organized multilevel and dynamically, revealed in a triad: thesis, antithesis, synthesis. In the image of Alyosha Karamazov the idea of "about a Christian" is embodied, which the historical reality and personality type did not allow the author to fully realize in Myshkin. Any creation is not only the face of the author in his mobile reality, but also the outcome from it, a creative meta-idea.

Female Characters in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Novels in Interpretation of Vyacheslav Ivanov

The article analyzes the works of Vyacheslav Ivanov on Fyodor Dostoevsky. Using the material from the book “Dostoevsky: Tragedy — Myth — Mysticism” (1932), the research principles and interpretive strategies implemented by Vyacheslav Ivanov in interpreting the female characters in Dostoevsky’s novels “Crime and Punishment,” “The Devils,” and “The Idiot” are identified. It is shown that Ivanov’s conception of the artistic features of characters such as Sonya Marmeladova, Alena Ivanovna, Maria Timofeevna, and Nastasya Filippovna are revealed in the context of the “main myth” of the works. The mythopoetic and functional aspects are highlighted as the most significant in Ivanov’s interpretations of the female characters. Additionally, it is argued that the psychological and spiritual characteristics of the heroines are not overlooked by the hermeneutist, as understanding the nuances of their inner world was necessary for him to reveal the mythopoetic functions. Through Ivanov’s interpretations of Dostoevsky’s female characters, it becomes evident that the poet-thinker’s approach to the writer’s works represents a synthesis of philosophical conceptualization and historical-literary perspective.

The article analyses different readings of Dostoevsky’s novel The Idiot by four prominent Catholic theologians: Romano Guardini, Henri De Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Divo Barsotti. The works by De Lubac, Balthasar, and Barsotti are considered in a chronological order, while Guardini’s text is analyzed at the end of the paper, as it raises the question on the nature of the artistic word in The Idiot more directly. The history of the Catholic reception of Dostoevsky’s The Idiot attests that in this novel the Russian writer managed to create a literary work that is perceived by the reader as highly ambivalent. The connection between the main character, Prince Myshkin, and Christ is evident, however, it can be interpreted in very different ways. This ambivalence becomes for Guardini a key to a deeper understanding of the novel and its theological content.
