Double beta decay and neutrino mass models

Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay allows to constrain lepton number violating extensions of the standard model. If neutrinos are Majorana particles, the mass mechanism will always contribute to the decay rate, however, it is not a priori guaranteed to be the dominant contribution in all models. Here, we discuss whether the mass mechanism dominates or not from the theory point of view. We classify all possible (scalar-mediated) short-range contributions to the decay rate according to the loop level, at which the c… Show more

“…The sterile neutrinos also contribute to the neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude; the parameter space of the effective mass m ββ is larger than in the standard 3ν case. This can be used to probe the existence of a sterile neutrino, but it does not guarantee an observable m ββ due to possible cancellations [110,111]. 1 Besides the decay in Eq.…”

“…For exhaustive lists of references on the LQ phenomenology one can consult reviews on the subject [7][8][9][10] or turn to the numerous studies of specific aspects of the LQ related physics [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. The one-loop contributions towards neutrino masses that we study have been considered extensively in the literature [1,2,[18][19][20][21][22]. Our intention, in contrast to the existing studies, is to analyse possibilities to have a more fundamental origin of this mechanism and to provide several realistic examples.…”

“…The model under consideration does not contain any right-handed neutrino, instead it generates neutrino masses at 2-loop order [33]. Since for our purposes the exact numerical fit to neutrino data is not important, we will not discuss the details here.…”
