Double Dissociations between Neglect Tests: Possible Relation to Lesion Site

Abstract: In 20 patients who had suffered a first right hemisphere stroke, we examined the prevalence of double dissociations between the results of a star cancellation and a line bisection test. Both are common methods to assess spatial hemineglect. Within the group of neglect patients, we found no significant correlation between the two tasks. Furthermore, 5 patients with impaired performance on one of the tests were within the normal range on the other one. In agreement with experimental studies, we argue that spatia… Show more

“…352,353 Notably, many cognitive tests are inappropriate for patients with communication disorders because of the speech and language demands of the tests' instructions, stimuli, or required responses. 358 With respect to neglect, use of multiple tests is recommended because of the variable sensitivity of neglect tests and to assist with the identification of neglect subtypes.…”

“…Neglect may be task-speci c (12,13). In assessing neglect, therefore, it is crucial to use several tests (14), in order to reveal different modalities of the disorder.…”

“…23 Indeed the estimated frequency of neglect varies considerably with the type of test or coding criteria. [24][25][26][27][28][29] Computerised tasks were used to assess perceptual-premotor components of neglect [30][31][32][33][34] and the presence, severity, and evolution of anosognosia 35 36 and extinction [37][38][39][40][41] were also evaluated. If anosognosia and extinction are independent of neglect, their presence and recovery patterns might dissociate, otherwise they should coexist and recover similarly.…”
