Double-Edged Effect of Humic Acid on Multiple Sorption Modes of Calcined Layered Double Hydroxides: Inhibition and Promotion

Abstract: Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a typical class of anionic clay minerals whose structural memory effect has been widely used in pollutant adsorption. However, the influencing mechanism of humic acid (HA) on the structural memory effect in adsorption is not clear. In this study, HA was extracted from black soil and sediments, and its effect on the structural memory effect of LDHs with different divalent metals was evaluated in adsorption. Borate complexed with HAs and HAs promoted the dissolution of magnes… Show more

“…Thanks to the robust phosphorus removal of LDH structure, CZF achieved better co-uptake under dramatic HA interference. Compared with other LDH-adsorbents [42], this work has faced down the issue of HA interference on phosphorus due to the fixing advantage of the host materials. Further investigation of metal leaching in the presence of HA is required.…”

“…However, the transformation of these hydrotalcite structures is closely related to environmental factors. The previous studies show that HA can indeed affect the regeneration of hydrotalcite structures and can even affect the mechanism by which they remove pollutants . However, this research has been conducted at the macromolecular level and does not use a simple functional group model to further explore its interaction with hydrotalcite.…”

“…12 Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been applied to the field of corrosion resistance due to the advantages of twodimensional sheet structures and small sizes, high loadings, and easy modification. 13 The interlayer regions of LDHs contain both interlayer anions and water molecules, and there is a complex network of hydrogen bonds between layer hydroxyl groups, anions, and water molecules. The general formula of LDHs is [M 2+ 1−x M 3+ (OH) 2 ] x+ (A n− )x/n•mH 2 O, where the cations M 2+ and M 3+ occupy the octahedral holes in a brucite-like layer; the metal anion A n− is located in the hydrated interlayer galleries, which can be replaced by other anions; and n is the charge of the interlayer anion.…”
