Downlink spectrum allocation in 5G HetNets

Abstract: Abstract-Fifth generation mobile systems (5G) target an Average Area Spectral Efficiency (AASE) over hundred Gbps/km 2 /user for future mobile systems with an Energy Dissipation (ED) per unit area similar to the current ED levels. Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with high density of deployed small cells are currently adopted to aid in achieving the target ED and AASE by 5G. Limited spectrum availability requires efforts to manage the spectrum utilization in such dense deployments. Development of new network a… Show more

“…Each FBS is assumed to serve one UE which is randomly located in the coverage area. The simulation parameters and the online mechanism related parameters are listed in Table I We compare the performance of our online learning scheme to validate its performance with reference schemes including: Down-SA [14], Joint-RALA [15], and Matching-RM schemes [16]. Down-SA proposes an architecture that consists of a Decision Support System (DSS) and a data collection system to dynamically manage and control the spectrum allocation process in the heterogeneous 5G networks.…”

“…This ever increasing network complexity is driving operators toward a virtualization of network functionality that calls for a paradigm shift from a hardware-based approach to a software-based approach [16], [17]. In this work, we develop an intelligent management framework based on the concept of SDN, which is featured by the decoupling of control plane from data plane [18], [19]. The intelligent SDN framework aims to provide a viable way to solve the existing challenges in a unified manner [20], [21].…”
