Downy Brome (Bromus tectorum) Control with Diclofop in Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum)

Abstract: The methyl ester of diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid} applied at 0.8 to 1.4 kg ai/ha and incorporated prior to seeding winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) controlled downy brome (Bromus tectorumL. ♯ BROTE) better than when applied preemergence at 1.7 kg/ha in 2 of 4 yr. The emulsifiable concentrate and a granular formulation of diclofop performed similarly. Controlling downy brome improved wheat yields 3 of 4 yr. However, preplant-incorporated applications of diclofop at 1.4 kg/ha red… Show more

“…Winter wheat yields in the central Great Plains were reduced 10,15, and 20% by 20,40, and 65 downy brome plants per m 2 , respectively (13). Moder ate levels of downy brome control in winter wheat have been reported for chlorsulfuron { (2- (12), metribuzin [4amino-6-( 1,1 -dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5(4//)-one] (14), and the ethylthio analog of metri buzin (10). Downy brome control in conservation-fallow systems in western Canada was 80 to 90% with glyphosate, paraquat (l,rdimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium ion), quizalo fop, sethoxydim {2-[l-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-l-one}, and a gly phosate + 2,4-D mixture (2).…”

“…When downy brome plants were removed from winter wheat by early March, a 6% yield reduction occurred, but each month's delay in removal from March to June reduced wheat yield an additional 9 to 12% (12). Control (89%) of greater than 175 downy brome plants m2 resulted in 24% higher winter wheat grain yield in Kansas (14).…”

“…Grower adoption of conservation tillage practices and semidwarf cultivars have increased and dispersed annual brome species in winter wheat (7,8,11,13). Downy brome densities of 100 to 200 plants m 2 are common and occasionally exceed 400 plants m 2 in winter wheat (12,13,14).…”

“…Downy brome interference with winter wheat is well documented. Dense infestations (> 100 plants m-2 ) of downy brome have reduced winter wheat yields 21 to 92% (Rydrych 1974; Rydrych and Muzik 1968;Stahlman 1984). whereas downy brome densities of 24 to 65 plants m-2 reduced wheat yields 10 to 44% (Rydrych andMuzik 1968: Stahlman andMiller 1990).…”
