Draft Genome Sequence of Sinorhizobium meliloti AK555

Abstract: The inoculation of legume seeds with Sinorhizobium bacteria significantly improves pasture production. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of symbiotically efficient and salt-tolerant Sinorhizobium meliloti inoculant strain AK555, which substantially increases biomass yield of a number of Medicago sativa subsp.

“…The localization and copy number of the 14 genes involved in the response to salt shock and prolonged salt stress in S. meliloti in order to obtain knowledge about a stressrelated gene pool formation were determined for the first time. For this purpose, complete sequenced genomes of the 26 strains (including 4 strains whose genomes were previously sequenced by us [68][69][70][71]) were studied. The analysis of S. meliloti strains was carried out in comparison with the data obtained by us from the study of the genomes of the other 25 strains from different species belonging to four classes (α-, βand γ-proteobacteria, as well as Actinobacteria).…”

“…Short-read whole-genome sequencing was carried out by Macrogen, Inc. (Seoul, South Korea), on an Illumina platform using the TruSeq DNA PCR-free kit; in total, 12.1 million 2 × 150-bp sequence reads were generated. The reads were quality trimmed, and adapter sequences and possible contaminants were removed as previously described ( 4 ).…”

“…The widespread interactions between the ␣-rhizobium Sinorhizobium meliloti and legumes of the Medicago genus are a model experimental system to investigate symbiosis (5-7). The two most recently published S. meliloti draft genome sequences correspond to strains AK170 and AK555, isolated from wildgrowing Medicago plants in northwest Kazakhstan in the Aral Sea region (8)(9)(10). This area suffers from man-made pollution, drought, and salinization, thus constituting a source of salt-tolerant rhizobia with expected increased symbiotic competence under these extreme conditions (11).…”
