DREAM — a versatile powder diffractometer at the ESS

Abstract: The key design parameters for the ESS provide new opportunities in neutron diffraction. The long pulse at 5 MW is most intense and about two orders of magnitude larger than the neutron flux of today's leading pulsed sources. The peak brightness clearly exceeds those of the existing short pulse spallation sources. Tailoring the pulse with fast choppers results in a very flexible time-resolution and yields a unique versatility for measuring either with highest resolution or highest intensity for tiny samples or … Show more

“…The segments are designed with a tapered shape that allows close packing into a cylinder around the sample. For the POWTEX and DREAM mantel detectors, the design is such that the cylinder will have its axis in the beam direction, providing hermetic and uniform φ -coverage around the sample under investigation and 90 • acceptance in 2θ [12,29]. In the HEIMDAL instrument, the detector cylinder will have the symmetry axis perpendicular to the beam axis and cover an angle φ =±22 • in the vertical plane, see next subsection.…”

“…For example, the estimated time-averaged flux over the wavelength interval 0.6-2.3 Å at the Heimdal sample position for ∆d/d=1% at 90 • can be as high as 10 9 n/s/cm 2 . This is more than one order of magnitude greater than the highest flux achieved on the POWGEN or WISH samples in the same experimental conditions [49]. It is important to mention here that the flux calculations included in all instrument proposals submitted to the 2013 evaluation round were made for the geometry of the coupled moderator presented in the TDR [2].…”

“…Pulse-shaping to 10 µs will yield an ultimate high resolution of 0.03% at λ =1.5 Å. The neutron optics will be optimised for a vertical and horizontal divergence at the sample position of 0.5 • [49].…”
