“…A cut-off-score ≥5 suggested by Buysse et al [14] was used to exclude participants with unhealthy sleep. Because of a possible influence on the sleep architecture [15], samples were limited to right-handed participants, as measured by self-report and the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory [16], and non-smokers [17]. The Digit Span Forward test from the WMS-R [18] was used to make sure that concentration and working memory of all participants were average at minimum.…”

“…For measuring handedness in the present study, a very crude measure was applied, as the main focus of the study was the relationship between book preferences and dreaming. Future studies should use more sophisticated ways of assessing handedness; for overviews see Annett (2002), Beaton (2003), and Christman and Propper (2010). Also, as handedness is related to a host of other factors (Domellöf, Johansson, & Rönnqvist, 2011) that can affect brain functioning, such as preterm birth, a broad battery of cognitive tests would be desirable to characterize the samples of left-handers, right-handers, and persons with mixed/inconsistent-handedness.…”

“…In order to test the hypothesis put forward by Christman and Propper (2010), it would be interesting to correlate corpus callosum size and dream-recall frequency, expecting larger sizes to be related to higher dream recall. In view of the present finding, however, large sample sizes would be needed to test this small effect.…”

“…Although distinct states, anaesthesia and sleep share many traits and neural pathways , and sleep architecture has been shown to vary based on handedness with consistent right‐handers exhibiting increased time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and decreased time in non‐REM sleep . Several studies have investigated the relationship between handedness and sleep quantity or quality, with conflicting findings .…”
