“…It is well-known that many pesticides (Yeh et al 2006;Chang et al 2006;Huang et al 2008), including endosulfan (Campero et al 2008) may cause immunosuppression. Yet, this effect is not present in every study (e.g., Sumith et al 2009;Laria Lamela et al 2008). In current study this reduction in the investment of immune function as measured by the activity of PO, was only observed in C. coleoptrata at 8 lg l -1 while no effects were present in H. linnaei and S. lateralis.…”

“…Phipps et al (1995) reported that trace amount of p,p'-DDT decreased the survival of amphipod Hyalella azteca, with a median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) of 0.07 μg L −1 . Sumith et al (2009) demonstrated that the residue of γ-HCH may affect phenoloxidase enzyme activity in the postlarvae of Penaeus monodon Fabricius inhabiting Chantaburi River estuary, Thailand, and the maximum in sediment was as high as 58.1 ng g −1 . In addition, both HCHs and DDTs can accumulate in aquatic organisms gradually due to their high hydrophobicity.…”

“…However both studies show that although it is interesting to demonstrate changes at the biochemical level, it is important to understand what effect, if any this will have on the population. Sumith, et al (2009) evaluated the toxicity of two organochlorines, endosulfan and lindane, after 96 hours exposure to 10 day old larvae of the Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Mixture concentrations were equitoxic and ranged from 10% less and 100 % more than the LC50 values and interactions were compared using an additive index, where an index of zero indicates the chemicals interact additively.…”
