The article discusses two deposits of coal mining by the open method. The «Zarechnyi» open-pit is located in Kuzbass, and the «Vostochno-Beiskyi» open-pit is in Khakassia. The main parameters of drilling and blasting operations are given, the geological structure of the deposits is described. The methods of calculating the specific charge, the diameter of the wells and the grid of wells are considered. Blasting operations are an integral part of the mining process. The cost of finished products and the quality of raw materials supplied to the crushing and screening complexes depend on the results of blasting of the rock mass. The currently used retractable blasting technologies, produced according to standard designs, lead to large energy losses during the explosion, as well as to the output of the oversized fraction, which in turn leads to downtime, reduced productivity and breakdown of transport and loading equipment. The paper substantiates the parameters of drilling and blasting operations taking into account the physical processes occurring in the explosive cavity and during the stress wave propagation in the rock mass. Parameters of detonation products are estimated on the basis of shock-wave compression, the refraction of a detonation wave into a rock based on the theory of the breakdown of an arbitrary discontinuity, the stress wave propagation taking into account polymorphic transformations and dissipation energy. Recommendations for reducing the specific charge of explosives, for choosing the diameter of the borehole charge and the grid of wells are proposed.

Blastability is defined as the resistance of rock mass to fragmentation due to the dynamic stress of blasting. Comprehensive study and understanding of geomechanical conditions of the in-situ rock mass are necessary to analyze the blastability along with optimal blasting design. Blastability Index (BI) is one of the most widely applied methods for the classification of rock mass and predicting the specific charge of blasting in open pit mines. Regarding the existence of uncertainty in the geomechanical characteristics of in-situ rock masses, accurate BI assessment requires a wide range of field studies. It could lead designers to a wrong decision about rock mass classification. Simulation is one of the reliable and applicable approaches to overcome the geomechanical uncertainties in rock mass studies. Therefore, in this paper, the Monte Carlo simulation method has been applied to blastability assessment in Sungun Copper Mine, Iran. For this purpose, the geological factors, including rock mass description, joint plane spacing, joint plane orientation, specific gravity influence, and hardness, were measured and implemented in 46 points of the pit wall. Statistical analysis was carried out to find out the best fit-distribution functions of all mentioned parameters. After that, the Monte Carlo simulation program was developed and carried out in MATLAB software. The overall results of the simulation reveal that the Monte Carlo method could provide a better vision of any possible combination of geological factors. It is also found out that less than two percent of the rock masses do have challenging blastability conditions, and the average blastability of rock masses in the studied mine is 18, which is close to an average score of blastability classification as well.

The safety of mining and exploitation operations is an important factor that allows accident-free mining of mineral raw materials. To achieve this goal, the companies take various measures to reduce hazardous factors, which include blasting and distribution of seismic explosion waves as the phenomenon under consideration. The initial calculation for the reduction of hazardous factors is based on a specially designed procedure. Currently, there are no approved standard methods that could relate to impact of seismic explosion waves on the mounting of mine openings. Various researchers have developed procedures that have certain advantages and disadvantages. This paper presents the methods to assess seismic explosion impact during joint development of coal deposits, which are commonly applied in Russia. It shows the analysis of proposed methods and directions for further improvement of calculations of safe parameters of seismic explosion waves to mine openings.
