Driver and Vehicle Characteristics and Platoon and Traffic Flow Stability

Abstract: Advanced driver assistance (ADA) systems may change individual driver and vehicle characteristics and influence the overall traffic flow performance. An overview is presented of the relationship between individual driver and vehicle characteristics and platoon and traffic flow stability under manual, ADA, and mixed traffic. The factors that make traffic flow stable or unstable are reviewed and categorized, and how ADA systems influence traffic flow stability is reviewed. The definition of traffic flow stabilit… Show more

“…The primary performance measure of a platoon of vehicles is string stability, which ensures that the inter-vehicular spacing errors of all the vehicles are hounded uniformly in time provided the initial spacing errors of all the vehicles are bounded. A string of vehicles is said to be string stable when any non-zero position, speed and acceleration errors are not amplified when they propagate upstream [3], [8]. The string stability results to traffic jam for no apparent reason, a shockwave [12] of continuously increased braking ( seiscon 2013) 12-14 Dec 2013 -K.C.G College of Technology -Chennai due to heavy traffic or erratic driving behavior, upstream a string of vehicles, until the vehicle stops [9].…”

“…Much work on control design and stability analysis of vehicle platoons does not explicitly address both time delays [13]. Omitting the combination of sensor delay and actuator lag in the control loop may result in over-optimistic evaluations of the controller performance and the corresponding impacts on traffic flow [11].…”
