Drivers and limits of phenotypic responses in vulnerable seagrass populations:Zostera marinain the intertidal

Abstract: Intertidal seagrass meadows are exposed to both marine and terrestrial environmental constraints. Seagrass vulnerability to climate changes in these highly dynamic and thermally stressful environments is concerning. Using broadscale monitoring data covering contrasted intertidal environments, this study aims to provide a comprehensive view of the extent, drivers and potential limits of Zostera marina phenotypic responses. The links between phenotypic and reproductive strategies are also explored. Across 500 km… Show more

“…Beyond the presence of both habitats, these two sites were also chosen because they occur in environmental conditions that can be considered average at the scale of the region (thereby limiting extrapolation of the model; Boyé et al . (2017) ; Boyé et al . (2022) ; Toumi Chirine (n.d.)) while still harbouring different communities, representative of the known diversity gradient across the region (Boyé et al .…”

“…The absence of these expected correlations is possibly the result of the temporal dynamics of meadows. Strong inter-annual variability has been reported within meadows in several sites on the Atlantic coast of France, including some of the same sites studied here (Boyé et al, 2022). Our study considered a single season of a particular year, which may not have captured all of the possible environmental drivers that influence eelgrass morphology.…”
