“…Levels of overall genetic diversity observed in the localities using the NL and OL datasets ( H O = 0.073 and H O = 0.061, respectively, Table 1 ) were lower than the reported for other TEP marine organisms using microsatellite data ( García-De León et al, 2018 ; Reguera-Rouzaud et al, 2021 ), but they are comparable with values obtained using genomic data. This is the case of the genus Jasus ( J. cavereorum H O = 0.012 and J. paulensis H O = 0.087) ( Silva et al, 2021 ), Symphodus tinca , S. ocellatus ( Torrado et al, 2020 ), and for the freshwater species Esox lucius ( Sunde et al, 2022 ). A proper evaluation of the lower values of heterozygosity is necessary to avoid reaching erroneous conclusions.…”

“…The number of groups ranged from 2 to 11, with 1000 permutations, and the maximum Φ CT value (genetic diversity between groups) was calculated to determine the best way to group the population. A genetic distance matrix (Sunde et al, 2022 ) was created based on pairwise genetic divergences between populations. For geographic distance, the straight‐line distances between populations were calculated in terms of longitude and latitude.…”

“…An increasing number of studies have provided evidence of differentiation resulting from such ecological and behavioural barriers (e.g. Bergek & Björklund, 2007;Momigliano et al, 2017;Nordahl et al, 2019;Rundle et al, 2000;Sunde et al, 2021;Vonlanthen et al, 2009). Hence, knowledge of cryptic barriers is crucial to avoid loss of unique genetic and phenotypic variation within and among subpopulations (Hutchinson, 2008;Schindler et al, 2010;Stephenson, 1999).…”

“…Separation of anadromous perch into different freshwater systems during spawning raises the question whether this, as in other anadromous species (e.g. pike (Nordahl et al, 2019;Sunde et al, 2020Sunde et al, , 2021 and salmonids (Fraser et al, 2011)), has resulted in genetic differentiation between spawning localities. Spatial genetic differentiation in perch is influenced by several factors, such as dispersal, home range, and reproductive homing.…”
