DROSERA: A DROne Simulation Environment for Risk Assessment

Abstract: HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L'archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau recherche, publiés ou non, émanant des établissements d'enseignement et de recherche français ou étrangers, des labor… Show more

“…They analyzed drone failure modes and the probability distribution of their impacts on the ground, quantifying the risk of drones crashing into people, property, and ground traffic. Raballand [4] introduced a method to calculate the probability of ground casualties and traffic accidents resulting from drone loss of control. They provided various models for probability calculations and introduced wind condition influence models and time-sensitive models applicable to people and traffic.…”

“…To evaluate the risks, the DROSERA tool [12] is used. It aims at quantifying the risks induced for third parties at ground likely to be overflown by a drone mission.…”

“…Existing work investigated the use of risk maps in case of a crash by taking into account the drone's characteristics, the environment, and the weather [24], [25]. Such visualizations can help operators understand the risks associated with their operations.…”

“…For instance, the impact of the wind on safety buffers was very dependent on the drone used and required adequate models that we could not find. Using existing tools providing ground risks according to operational parameters such as Drosera [25] could considerably expand our prototype. Regarding the validity of our data, we acknowledge that a focus group is not a user test.…”
